Objectives: The aim of this project was to seamlessly integrate the latest ICD-11 classification system into an existing Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, thereby replacing the previous version, ICD-10.
Solution: In the preparatory phase, our project team meticulously examined the documentation available on the World Health Organization’s website (https://icd.who.int) to understand the intricacies of ICD-11. Leveraging the Embedded Coding Tool (ECT), we seamlessly integrated ICD-11 into our client’s Electronic Health Record platform. This integration was facilitated through the use of the REST API provided by the ICD-11 application managed by the WHO.
Additionally, as a contingency measure, we deployed the ICD-11 API as a Windows service. This serves as a backup solution in scenarios where the ICD-11 application is inaccessible on the WHO side, ensuring uninterrupted access to essential classification data.
Presently, the ICD-11 classification is effectively utilized by hundreds of Electronic Health Record platform users, demonstrating its seamless integration and practical utility within the system.
